The thermal station chimneys located on Dublin Harbour, otherwise known as the Poolbegg Chimneys are among the tallest structures in Ireland.
Completed in 1978, the No.2 chimney stands at almost 208 M high. In 2010, the Poolbegg Station was due to be decommissioned placing the future of the famous landmarks in doubt. Subsequent community protest eventually lead to Dublin City Council listing the chimneys for preservation to safeguard their future on Dublins skyline.
They were listed as protected structures in July 2014. The repainting of the chimney's most recognisable red and white bands will continue through to end of 2024.
"I think the magic in this shot was the timing of low tide and a broad sand bank. If the tide had been up to the harbour wall, I would've included much more cloud movement, positioning the silhouetted chimneys close to the bottom of the frame where the suns reflection sits.
I almost always seek to scale human presence, especially industrial monoliths like these two chimneys, smaller giving way to natures vastness and magnificence.
The way the suns rays seemingly perforated the cloud stream above was worth the wait."
